Soror Spotlight: Jewell A. Staley

An epiphany can be a rare moment when you come face to face with your passion and purpose. If you are among those fortunate few to have had this experience, you already know that an epiphany can be life altering or the confirmation you need to stay the course. With these truly uncertain times, a national broadcast of your passion is nothing less than a gift wrapped confirmation to follow your dreams.

After leaving a lucrative job in Japanese trading on Wall Street, Northeast Region Tamiochus, Jewell A. Staley created Grande Properties LLC a real estate investment and staging company. Grande Properties' staging division provides homeowners the opportunity to attract more offers by creatively decorating/positioning their home to be appealing to the vast majority of consumers.

Last October, our very own Soror Jewell A. Staley was featured on an episode of A & E's television show "Flip this House".. The Northeast Region Sophisticate had an opportunity to interview Soror Staley on the evening of her TV debut.

NERS: How did you feel watching yourself on TV?

JAS: It was my first time ever on television and it was very surreal. The moments leading up to the show was very nerve wrecking. However, I'm very happy with it.

NERS: How did this opportunity happen for you?

JAS: Colleagues would ask me "Who staged your home?" I saw an opportunity to meet a need and it began from there. One day, I received a phone call from a fellow investor and they asked me "Are you interested in staging a house for TV?" I said "Absolutely".

NERS: How did this all happen? What made you start Grande Properties?

JAS: I always had an interest in real estate but school and my career on Wall St. kept me very busy. Three years ago I made the decision to [go ahead and] start a business.

NERS: Did Sigma Gamma Rho help your business?

JAS: Yes! I asked Sorors for recommendations and leads and actually one of my investors is a Soror!

NERS: You are a regional officer and a CEO..How are you able to do both?

JAS: It's simple, I made a commitment to the region and I try to keep Sorors in the loop with what is going on with me and the business.

NERS: Where do you see your company in the next 5 years?

JAS: Well I definitely want it to be more than a 1 woman company. I would like to expand to residential sales and apartment complexes.

NERS: How has the economy affected your business?

JAS: It is difficult at times. The pool of eligible buyers is smaller. However, there are different aspects to the business. For example, with apartments, people continue to rent who cannot afford to buy.

NERS: Do you have any advice for your sorors or anyone who may want to start a business?

JAS: Yes. Use the resources around you. Don't try to do it alone. Do a little at a time and build up to where you want to be. Don't quit your day job...use it as your capital.
